according to legend, the moon rabbit is a companion to the moon goddess hằng nga and pounds the elixir of life for her in its pestle. it lives in the moon with the toad and can be seen every year in full view on mid-autumn day, or august 15th. on the day of the full moon, a rabbit, fox, and monkey believed a demonstration of great virtue would earn a great reward. when an old man begged for food from them, the monkey gathered fruits from the trees and the otter collected fish, while the fox found a lizard and milk-curd. knowing only how to gather grass, the rabbit instead offered its own body by throwing itself into a fire the man had prepared. but hằng nga, struck by the courage and noble heart of the little rabbit, saved him and took him with her to the moon.hearing about the story of hằng nga and her lover, the jade rabbit felt sympathetic to them and decided to make a special heavenly medicine, which could help hằng nga return to earth. unfortunately, the jade rabbit has still not been able to make it even though, he has worked hard for thousands of years. observing the moon on the mid-autumn day carefully, we can still see the jade rabbit making his heavenly medicine. in one legend told in and around beijing, a deadly plague came to the city 500 years ago ravaged the land and as decided by chang'e, the only thing that could save the city from this epidemic was the jade rabbit. chang'e sent the him to earth to visit each family and cure them of this plague. he did just that and asked for nothing in return except some clothes and often changed from man to woman. after curing the city of this plague, it returned to the moon.but the burden of carrying this title is far too heavy and as with the many iterations of its story comes different rabbits themselves; materialized out of the beliefs of their people, hiền and his 'siblings' toil day in and out to protect hằng nga from harm, find a way to reunite her with her beloved, and keep the humans on earth safe as well. all 13 of them.
